How to Choose the Best 4K Monitor for Mac Mini M1?

To experience the true potential of the Mac Mini M1, you need to buy the most compatible monitor. Here are some facts that you should keep in mind while choosing one.

My list includes different models with various screen sizes. From standard 27” to large 38” curved, you can choose any of them.

Try to pinpoint the main purpose of using the monitor, and purchase accordingly.

After display size, you have to select the resolution. I know that all of the reviewed products in this article are 4K.

Still, I want to talk about it. Even if you don’t want to choose one from my list, you must not settle with an FHD or 2K monitor. Because lower resolution won’t give you the satisfaction of using Mac Mini M1.

Gaming Feature

Now, if you are not a heavy gamer, you won’t have to worry about refresh rate or input lag. The highest refresh rate is offered by LG 38WN95C-W.

And, ASUS VP28UQG has the lowest input lag. Both are fantastic monitors for gaming. So, choose one according to your budget.

Furthermore, FreeSync and GSync, are great for systems with dedicated graphics cards.

Another important factor is to ensure the required connectivity ports. Don’t buy a monitor without a USB-C port.

It would be better if your chosen one has a thunderbolt port. Multiple connectivity options are good for daily uses.

Lastly, decide how much you are willing to spend on a 4K monitor for your M1 Mac Mini.

If you check the prices of my selected models, you will see that they range from $250 to slightly over $2000. So, everyone can choose a model within their budget limit.

How Did I Pick?

While choosing the best UHD monitor for Mac Mini M1, I gave models with thunderbolt ports more emphasis. Because it has more bandwidth capacity and allows up to 6K resolution at a 60 Hz refresh rate.

Still, the HDMI port can be sufficient for most of the requirements. With different port options, it will be easier to use multiple monitors at the same time.

So, I have given various monitors a chance to appear in this article for your consideration. Check them out in the main review section below.

The bezels are not as thin as the previous one from LG. But it looks thin and stylish. On the backside, U2720QM looks a bit bulky.

A hole in the stand works as a cable manager. So, there won’t be anything extra needed to keep the cords together.

Those are all the reasons I have chosen it as the second-best 4K monitor for Mac Mini M1.

Tip: Those who want to control the brightness and sound settings of the monitor through their computer must connect it using HDMI or DP port.

The Good

Native UHD resolution along with wide color gamut coverage are the main good sides of Dell U2720QM. You will also like its several connectivity and adjustment options. To set it in the right position, one can adjust the height, tilt, swivel, and pivot the screen.

The Bad

Access to the ports is downwards which makes it hard to insert the cables. They should have designed it outward.

For Professionals

Expecting the same quality as the previous one from Dell is not logical. Still, LG 32UN880-B can cover 95% of the P3 color gamut.

Furthermore, 5ms response time and support for HDR10 make the monitor suitable for medium to some heavy-duty tasks.

350 cd/m2 peak brightness and 1000:1 contrast ratio also play an important role in seamless usage in bright environments.

Having a USB 3.2 type C port in the monitor comes with lots of benefits for Mac Mini users. A single cable is more than enough to send video signals, audio signals, and carry out other tasks that a normal 3.1 USB-A port would do.

Summary: As the monitor mounts at one side of the table, you can have more space on the desk. Besides that, it has a great image quality like the premium ones. Also, for its automatic adaptation to Apple’s Night Shift feature, you have to give LG 32UN880-B a try.

4. Dell UltraSharp U2720Q – Good Price Considering Great Display Quality

Dell UltraSharp U2720Q

A high-quality IPS panel with lots of convenient features is the reason I have selected UltraSharp U2720Q to place in my recommendation list.

Design Features

Seeing the two models from Dell on this list, you won’t be able to find much difference in aesthetics. On the 3 sides of the monitor, the bezel is very thin making it look very stylish.

Its overall build quality may not satisfy you much because of the cheap plastic. But durability is not much of an issue.

The stand has adjustable features so that you can set the display in the right position. Tilting, swiveling, pivoting, or raising the height is not a problem.

When it comes to performance, UltraSharp U2720Q also has the same quality as the previous model.

With a 5ms response time, 350 nits of peak brightness, and 1300:1 contrast ratio, the monitor can meet both entertainment and work-related needs.

Advanced circuitry ensures almost 100% of the sRGB gamut, and 95.3% DCI-P3 coverage. As it doesn’t have any support for Adaptive-Sync technology, don’t expect a great gaming experience.

Tip: For the best results, you should calibrate the monitor as per your preferred settings.

The Good

Fantastic post-calibration results along with a wide color gamut, and attractive design are the reasons people like U2720Q a lot. The 90W USB-C port also proves to be useful in lots of cases.

The Bad

Bad quality plastic around the bezel is disappointing for such a monitor. Also, it lacks FreeSync support.

Summary: Don’t try to do intense photo and video editing or playing high-end games on Dell UltraSharp U2720Q. It is more suitable for day-to-day normal tasks and watching contents of 4k resolution.

5. LG 38WN95C-W – Supports 4K Resolution at 144 Hz

Key Features:

  • Display Size: 38”
  • Peak Brightness: 450 nits
  • Max. Refresh Rate: 144 Hz @ QHD+
  • Input Lag: 1ms
LG 38WN95C-W

Check Latest Price

Though LG 38WN95C-W is not exactly a 4K display, you should check it out for its awesome features and performance. Those who are planning for a two-monitor setup must read this review before making a final decision.

Great Image Quality

The 3840 x 1600 resolution is very close to having a 4K monitor. It costs more than 200 bucks. Now, you may ask, what are the reasons to buy it?

Because of the thunderbolt 3 connectivity, 450 nits of peak brightness, 1ms response time, and 144 Hz refresh rate, it is well-worth investing such an amount.

Furthermore, the monitor has a VESA rating of DisplayHDR 600 along with support for 98% DCI-P3 color gamut. For gaming enthusiasts, LG 38WN95C-W supports Nvidia GSync.

The first thing you will notice after setting up the monitor is the identical design of the base compared to the curved screen. The metal structure gives the heavy product enough stability.

One can easily adjust the height and change the direction of it according to their convenience.

All three sides have a minimalistic bezel. Though it does not have any built-in webcam, you can install one easily.

Convenient Features

Due to the anti-glare technology, you won’t see outside light reflecting off its surface. So, playing games, or doing video or image editing can be more enjoyable.

Tip: Don’t place it on a small desk. Due to its big display size, LG had to create a large base for better stability. Therefore, you may get ample space to place your gaming keyboard.

The Good

LG 38WN95C-W is well-known for its QHD+ and bright 38” curved display. The Nano IPS screen has a wide viewing angle for work convenience. 144Hz refresh rate is the highest among the listed models here. It has anti-glare technology for eliminating eye strain.

The Bad

LG should focus more on the packaging. Because some delivery persons are not gentle at handling monitors. They replace damaged goods, but the time and hassle are not worth it.

Summary: No other model on the list is capable of supporting 2160p resolution at a 144 Hz refresh rate. For amazing quality and mind-blowing performance, you must get LG 38WN95C-W. Indeed, it is expensive but worth every penny.

6. ASUS VP28UQG – Affordable Having Gamer-friendly Features

Key Features:

  • Display Size: 28”
  • Peak Brightness: 300 nits
  • Max. Refresh Rate: 60 Hz @ 4K
  • Input Lag: 1ms

Check Latest Price

Spending only a fraction of what the previous monitor from LG costs, you can get a 4K model from Asus with a 1ms response time. For gamers, the deal is more sweater than anything else.

Gaming Performance

I keep mentioning this because the monitor supports both Adaptive-Sync and FreeSync technologies so that there is no ghosting or blurring image during live gaming sessions.

Its 1000:1 contrast ratio and 300 nits of peak brightness are not suitable in very bright environments. But keeping aside that one small problem, it has lots of good sides.

Without the proper ports, the monitor is useless for Mac Mini M1 users. One of the reasons I have put it on the list of the best 4K monitor for Mac Mini M1 is versatile connectivity options.

Use either HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2 for the best UHD experience. 60Hz refresh rate at 4K resolution places it even in a higher position than the expensive LG 38WN95C-W.

Good for Eyes

Asus monitors are famous for their Low Blue Light technology. Also, there is the flicker-free feature for a comfortable gaming experience. All of those reduce eyestrain which can damage the eyes in the long run.

Tip: Use the HDMI cable that comes with the package to get a 60 Hz refresh rate at 2160p resolution. Also, it will help you control the monitor settings from the Mac.

The Good

This is the most affordable model on the list with great 4K capabilities. Having Adaptive-Sync technologies, 10-bit color support, and great color accuracy, ASUS VP28UQG has won the trust of many.

The Bad

Using the joystick located on the back of the monitor is troublesome. It is very sensitive and makes adjusting the settings harder.

Summary: No backlight bleeding, a simple setup process and very low input lag make it another great UHD monitor for gaming. Those who don’t have the budget to buy the previous model should check ASUS VP28UQG out.

Final Thought

So, which one do you think is the best 4K monitor for Mac Mini M1? If you ask me, I have two recommendations for those who are in a hurry.

In the mid-budget range, I like LG 27UN850-W. And, to get something under $300, I will always prefer ASUS VP28UQG.

Indeed, I have put a very expensive model LG 38WN95C-W in the fifth place for your consideration. But I don’t see any point in buying it. Because it is not even a 4K monitor.

And, other models are well-balanced considering price and features without having major flaws. Read all about them to find out the right product for you.
